Dare I Say, “Get Healthy” On My New Year’s Resolutions? #Giveaway #FriendFriday

Noelle and Digger

Noelle is one of my dear friends with an amazing heart for Christ and it is my JOY to have her as our guest today!

Noelle Dey is a Certified Professional Life Coach, a Certified Group Fitness Instructor and the author of “Transformation by Truth: 30 days to a healthy heart, mind and body.” She pulls from her life history, including surviving heart failure at the age of 28, to share her compelling story of transformation as she coaches others through their own transformations. Noelle lives in Southern California with her husband Ryan, their daughter Sierra and their Corgi-Chihuahua mix, Digger.

I could feel sweat beads forming on the top of my head.

Focus straight ahead and keep driving.  That’s what went through my mind.  But in my peripheral vision, I could see my manager’s obviously-upset-stoic-New York face.  And I could see the dirt crusted on the sleeve of his nice suit.

He made the mistake of leaning up against my dirty company car.

The tension became too thick for my fragile stomach, so I decided to air the issue out and apologize.

“Hey, I’m really sorry for messing up your suit.  I’ll do a better job of keeping my company car clean.”

Without hesitation, he stammered, “I don’t even care what your company car looks like.  But how long has your check engine light been on?”

Ouch.

It had been on for a while.  But I didn’t want to take the time to address it.  I had people to see.  Things to do.

And then it hit me.  I don’t even pay for my car.  My company owns the pink slip.  They pay for most of the gas and all of the maintenance.  All they ask is that I keep it running well.  My company has blessed me with a reliable form of transportation so I can live out our mission statement to bring hope to cancer patients.

If I am neglectful and my car breaks down, I’m sidelined.  My company loses.  The doctors who I visit each day lose.  And I lose since I love my job.

Guess what?  You are like me.  We both have company cars.

Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body. -1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Our bodies are our company cars.  We do not belong to ourselves.  God holds our pink slips.  We don’t have to pay for these company cars.  He’s just asking us to maintain them because He wants us to fulfill a mission.

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. –Ephesians 2:10

Only you will interact with the souls God has ordained for you to see today.

You have a unique fingerprint on this world.

No one can take your place in the good works God had planned for you long ago.

You are needed in this mission.

So, it’s not just another New Year’s resolution.  We don’t have to white-knuckle our days with the mantra, “Eat less, move more.”  In fact, when we approach our health like the world does, we get the same results.  The failure rate is staggering.

But it’s so hard!

Of course it is.  There is a real battle in this world.  It’s a battle we can’t see with our eyes.  Jesus and Satan both have a mission.  They’re shared in the same Bible verse.

The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. –John 10:10

God loves you like crazy.

Jesus came to give you a rich and abundant life.  That’s not just life after you die.  That’s today, and throughout eternity.

But that rich life comes opposed.  The enemy’s only mission is to steal joy from you.  He wants to destroy.  Wreak havoc.  He prowls around you, with a desire to kill you.

Can he kill you?

No.  He doesn’t have the authority.  But can he tempt you?  Do whatever it takes to get you addicted to food and beverages that can kill you?  Can he lure you into a sedentary lifestyle, which can break down your company car?  Absolutely.

So, it’s not another check box on your New Year’s resolutions.  It’s a necessity in this world at war.  Get in the battle.  It’s no longer a battle against chocolate cake (or Flamin’ Hot Cheetos in my case).  It’s Jesus and Satan.

Jesus wins.

And you?  Are you doomed for another New Year’s resolution down the drain?

No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is YOURS through Christ, who loved YOU (enter your name here). –Romans 8:37

  3. I have determined that this year I will get healthy. I am over 300 pounds, can’t walk without the aid of a walker or crutches due to knee and foot issues and I am in pain constantly. I have been a single mom struggling to raise my son on my own and he was my focus. He has now grown up and recently moved to another state to start his career. I am now an empty nester. It is time for me to get myself healthy and I don’t know where to begin, I chose the word “healing” for my one word this year, I would love to win your book as I believe it will help me get started on my road to a healthy new me. I want my son to see the weight loss as my poor eating habits effected him growing up and he is now working on his weight.
Thank you for the message about our bodies being like a company car. It really has made me think differently about my body. Please pray for me as well. I need help.
    Thank you so much.

    1. Heavenly Father, You have begun a good… actually a GREAT work in Kathy. And You promise to complete this work until the day of Christ Jesus. You whisper in Kathy’s ear, “You are altogether beautiful, my darling, there is no flaw in you.” Let her receive Your truth in her heart of hearts. You love her like crazy. Regardless of her weight. At the same time, You hurt when she hurts. You know the physical discomfort she’s in. Her word for the year is precisely what Jesus came for. Psalm 103:3-4 remind us of that. You are the one who heals all Kathy’s diseases, who redeems her life from the pit, who crowns her with steadfast love and mercy. We praise You in advance for making 2016 her year of healing. In Jesus’ Name, amen!

So much love to you Kathy. xoxo

      1. Noelle,
Thank you for your kind prayer. I am in tears. I miss fellowship. I had surgery three years ago on my foot which did not go well. I have not been in church since due to the pain I am in. It is all I can do to get through the week at work where I am on my feet in a classroom. I have determined in my heart that this year, I will make it to church and get healthy. I so appreciate your prayers. I am just believing that He will help me and by this time next year, I will have a testimony to share and give Him all the praise and glory that he deserves. Thank you again for responding to my comment. I was even timid submitting it for all to see. It’s time to be honest and face the facts of my health. I will make it!

        1. Kathy, speaking from my own journey, there was a season when I could feel the spiritual warfare when it came to godly community. Like you, there was the Spirit within me that put an ache in my heart for Hebrews 10:25 fellowship. But also like you, there were barriers for me be in the midst of that healthy environment. Once I realized what was happening, I knew I needed to do what you’re doing now. I had to speak out about it. I needed accountability and help to get me to church and to be around believing friends. You are doing a great job my friend! xoxo

  5. When we understand deep in our soul that, “God loves you like crazy,” we live with such freedom! Why is it so hard for those beautiful words to move the short distance from our head to our heart? Thank you, Noelle, for this devo that is perfect for today and everyday from this point forward. Your ministry is such a blessing and I love your heart!

  8. I have become very lethargic by using my fibromyalgia as an excuse. I know I am not taking care of God’s temple and I need to get busy, but I need help.

    1. Oh Renée! I’m so sorry you’re enduring the pain and lethargy from fibromyalgia. My heart aches for such a trial. Heavenly Father, You whisper Your encouragement to Renée. You tell her that You are her helper. You’ve put Your Spirit in her… the same Spirit that rose Jesus from the grave. Help her. Empower her. Heal her. Let Your presence be so real to her this year, to the point that it’s palpable. We praise You in advance. In Jesus’ Name, amen. Huge hugs to you, friend! xo

  10. “But that rich life comes opposed. The enemy’s only mission is to steal joy from you. He wants to destroy. Wreak havoc. He prowls around you, with a desire to kill you.”

This is where I’m at. Defeated. I’m paralyzed. Not in body, but in spirit. For a month now I’ve pondered ways to break free from my mental restraints. I’ve got to lose weight, but can’t motivate myself to move or cook healthy meals. I’ve got to clean my house, but can’t motivate myself to pick anything up from the spot where I leave it. I’ve got to stimulate my brain with something useful, but I can’t tear my eyes from the TV. Paralyzed. Luckily, there is always hope in a new year, and comfort in seeing that glimmer.

I love the company car analogy. I can relate to that! And in reading this post I find excitement in the idea of looking at my hopeful goals as not just accomplishments for “this year”, but for the rest of my life. I like the idea of fighting my way up from the bottom of this hole I am in so I am prepared for the missions I am meant to fulfill. Thank-you!

  11. Heavenly Father, just as Jesus called Lazarus and brought him back to life… just as He wanted Lazarus out of his grave clothes… by Your Spirit, bless Suze with this same story. It might feel impossible to motivate herself. But Lord, you give us so many illustrations of just how powerful we are because of YOU. YOUR SPIRIT is at home in Suze! Renew her spirit. Remind her in very real ways that she can do ALL things through You, who gives her strength! In Jesus’ Name, amen!
I’m so excited to hear how God moves mightily in you, Suze. I’m continuing to pray that your heart is tender to His immense, unending love for you. Huge hugs to you, beautiful!
