#Indwelling

I have a magical place in my home where I win every argument, solve all the financial problems of the world while simultaneously establishing peace and put an end to world hunger. The greatest inspirational blog posts are written in this place…not that I remember them obviously…and all is right in the world, if even for a few moments.

It’s called the shower.

Mostly, I spend my time trying to let my mind go blank, resting from the headache of too much thinking and sitting behind a computer screen. The shower is a wonderful opportunity for me to blast one of my favorite worship stations on Pandora. As I wash away the bleh of the day, I allow the Lord to wash over me with His presence and song.

One such evening, Holy Spirit by Francessca Battestelli began to fill the room and naturally, I began singing along. As I reached up toward heaven, singing away, my heart gave pause. It was one of those moments so completely infused with God, the world disappeared down the drain.

Still reaching toward heaven I heard Him whisper, I’m not there. Instead, my hand gravitated to my heart…

Here I am, child.

Indeed, God resides on His heavenly throne and through the gift of the Holy Spirit, He lives in our hearts as well. God reminds us in 1 Corinthians‬ ‭6:19 and Romans 8:11‬‬:

Holy Spirit Rom

I think this Truth is my favorite beyond all Truth found in Scripture. Even more than the power of forgiveness.

Here’s why…

Before Christ rose and gave us the promised gift of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God rested on those whom God chose. Through out the Old Testament, we read passages where the “Spirit of God…” came/filled/rested on whomever God desired to fulfill a specific task or deliver a message. God then, would remove His Spirit as needed; such was the case for King Saul who disobeyed God and the “Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul,” I Samuel 16:14. God didn’t remove His Spirit from everyone, but it shows us the Holy Spirit didn’t have a permanent indwelling with us until after Christ’s resurrection and ascension into heaven.

The Holy Spirit has since been poured out onto into God’s children. And with it, the very power of God. Transforming us from the inside out.

What an incredible gift! We no longer have separation between ourselves and God! He literally and willingly lives within our heart. The power used to speak all of creation into existence lives in us. The same power that caused a young boy to defeat a giant and closed the mouths of lions lives in us. Remember when the sea was split in two…twice? That same power dwells within your heart. Here is the same Lord who has raised people from the dead, turn lives around, and redeemed us with His unending grace and He chooses to call our heart His home.

Permanently

No sin can separate you from His indwelling…save for one. Rejecting Him. Only by rejecting Him do we lose out on the gift of His Spirit and power.

Jeremy Camp has an amazing song out called Same Power from his album I Will Follow. We are reminded that no matter what we face, the same power of God lives in us. You and I can accomplish and overcome anything this world can lay at our feet.

Whatever you may be facing right now, God is still with you. In fact He is IN you.

Lord, words cannot express our gratitude for Your presence. Who are we, sin stained and unclean, yet You desire to take up residence in our heart of hearts. Every blemish washed anew with Your holy fire. Your Spirit speaks wisdom and guides our lives. Help us Lord to listen and above all share with others so that they too may receive the blessing poured out so freely from Your throne. Amen.

  1. Heather, this is one of my most favorite promises in all of Scripture as well and something I take every chance to teach on. If only we could all LIVE in the fullness of this promise, our lives would be transformed in a ginormous way and never ever ever be the same. And our world would, in turn, be transformed. Thank you for sharing and reminding us of this promised power that lives and breathes in us.

    1. It’s like we all live in a desert and forget this incredible living water surging through our bodies. I can only imagine what the world would be like if we all tapped into that surging. How the world would be changed, how we would be changed if we only took hold!
