How to make a #WardrobeCapsule

I first read about the “Wardrobe Capsule” from the Un-fancy blog. How I got there…I have no idea, because I’m so not a fashion girl. I go clothes shopping once a year…after Christmas…because I receive gift cards to Old Navy {which I adore}.

What exactly is a Wardrobe Capsule? Imagine only 37 items hanging in your closet.

That’s all you get to wear for the.next.three.months.

But wait…there’s more…

Thirty-seven includes your shoes, purses, jackets, pants, tops, and dresses.

I figured, what the heck, I’ll give this a shot. Anything to make choosing what to wear easier in the mornings!

Here’s how I made my WC using tips from Un-fancy.

IMG_09031.  Pick a Palette. Using one of my fave shirts, I found a close color match on the Design Seeds website and picked a palette for my WC. This palette was easy to work with for what I already have in my closet.

2.  Fashion Show. I COMPLETELY emptied my closet and tried on EVERYTHING. It took me a couple of hours and I enjoyed rediscovering my clothes. My hubby graciously helped me decide on a few items and I sent pics to my sister-in-law who is a fashion queen (LOVE HER!).

3.  Make Piles. One for items I just didn’t like, didn’t fit, or were less than pristine. Another pile for items that fit my palette. The last one was for items I wanted to keep, but didn’t fit my WC palette.

4.  Donate. I ended up donating three full bags of clothes, shoes, and purses to Good Will! Woot-woot!

IMG_09045.  37. From the palette pile, I picked out my 37 items. It’s important to know pjs, grubbies, and workout clothes don’t count toward your 37. Neither does jewelery or other accessories like scarves or watches. {I didn’t count my cowboy boots…because…well…BOOTS!} One tip I read which helped a great deal is when you pick your tops, make sure they can be paired with at least three of the bottoms you chose. Having the palette makes accomplishing this easier.

As of today, I am 8 weeks into my 12 week WC and I have very much enjoyed the simplicity my capsule has brought to my mornings. In about two weeks, I’ll work on my next WC and hopefully, all I’ll have to do is shop from my own closet!

So how about it? Are you game for paring down your wardrobe and having a little fun?
