Praying Back God’s Word

praying back God's Word

How often have we wanted to talk with God about something specific, only to discover the words just aren’t there? Not having the words is the least of our worries, because God tells us in Romans 8:26:

“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”

Even when the words escape us, His Holy Spirit, who dwells within our hearts, speaks FOR us! WOW! Since God and the Spirit are one…God is actually telling Himself our prayers even though we have no idea what to say! Trippy, incredible, and so true! God doesn’t stop there. He has given us His Word to use boldly in prayer when we don’t quite know where to start.

Let’s say we’re struggling with anxiety, but we can choose just about anything – fear, self doubt, temptation, patience, self control, peace, etc. I just popped over to Bible Gateway typed in “anxiety” and it returned with 7 verses, next I typed “anxious” and received 5 more verses. If I do my math correctly, that’s 12 verses right there we can start using; using my concordance we can probably double the number. Now we won’t be able to use a verse just because it has our word, but for the most part it’s easy to pick out what we need. For our purpose today, let’s focus on, I Peter 5:7 which says:

“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”

If we wanted to customize it or make it into a prayer we could rewrite saying:

“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you {your name}!”

OR

“Lord, help me to cast all my cares onto You because I know You care for me, Amen!”

We could pray this simple prayer anytime we began feeling anxious. In this way, we are using the very Word of God to talk with God and He is speaking right back to us.

We can do this for just about anything we are experiencing or choose verses to pray over members of our family and friends. What a gift from God! The very words we need are provided by His living and active Word {Hebrews 4:12}.

Here are a few other examples:

Wisdom/Understanding: Proverbs 3:5

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” becomes…

“Father, help me to trust in You with all my heart an not to lean on my own understanding, Amen.”

Patience: Colossians 3:12

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” becomes…

“Lord, I am one of Your chosen people, You have made me holy and I am dearly loved by You, clothe me with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience, Amen!”

Peace: Philippians 4:7

“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” becomes…

“Daddy, I need a peace that can only come from You, a peace that is beyond anything I can understand.  Guard my heart and my mind, keep my eyes focused on Your Son, Amen!”

These are just a few examples.  For a couple of the topics above over 100 verses came up when I did a search.  You can narrow your search by adding words.  The more words you add the narrower your search will become.  If you use a Concordance Bible, you won’t have to sift through as many verses.  Another option is doing a Google search, “Bible verses on ___________” and see what comes up!

Sooooo, can you guess what your assignment for today is??  Chose something you or a family member is struggling with.  Do a search and find a Bible verse or two, then turn that verse into a prayer.  If it’s a bit long, write it on a handy-dandy index card and carry it with you.  If you are using the verse for someone else, try to include their name when you rewrite the verse; this isn’t for God’s sake, He knows who you’re praying for, but this is to help you stay focused on that person.

If you are willing, at the bottom of this entry, post the verse you chose an the prayer you turned it into.  If you would like any suggestions, post it here and let the rest of us help you, in this way we will honor God’s Word which says: “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” I Thessalonians 5:11

Resources: Much of this I learned from Beth Moore’s book Praying God’s Word and from Wendy Blight’s book Hidden Joy focusing on Chapter 9.  Wendy also did a four week study in February 2011 called Cultivating a Heart of Prayer, which I highly recommend!  Other things I have learned long the way.

  4. Isaiah 26:3
You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.
This is one of my favorite verses to pray. Today, I am praying it for my brother who needs God’s peace today.

Lord, please keep ___ in your perfect peace, help his mind to stay focused on you because he trusts in you. Amen.

  5. My favorite bible study tool is blue letter bible. I love using a concordance to find out the meaning of the words, reading a commentary like Matthew Henry to get a little more insight, and finding cross references to understand what He wants to teach me. I love this idea – praying His word. It’s something I’m learning to do this year. And that verse about anxiety – it is EXACTLY what I need. Thank you!

  6. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” John 15:11 (NIV)
I sometimes have trouble remembering where I should get my joy from. I look to people and things to make myself happy. I memorized this verse so I would have a constant reminder on my heart. I don’t normally pray God’s Word but I think it is a wonderful concept. Thank you for this insight.

Lord please help me to remember that Your is in me so that my joy may be complete. I need to look no further than You for my joy. Thank You for this Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  7. Heather I am catching up in the Bible Study so I just read this earlier this morning. I also did the Hidden Joy study and have started praying back His Word. I chose the one you posted from colossians 3:12 because I need to always remember I am Chosen. Beautiful post, thank you and may God continue to flood you with His love.
