I <3 God’s Discipline

I’m doing Wendy Blight’s Bible study on the book of Hebrews and one of my answers for chapter 12 may be a bit long, so I’m writing it here instead.

I know when most people think of discipline, they think of being punished for doing something wrong, but it’s so much more than that. Yes, there are consequences for our sins, because our sin separates us from God. God’s discipline comes when we break the Laws He has so graciously given us, so that we may have life and live it to the fullest.  His discipline also comes before we commit sins.  Think of Proverbs 4:11, “I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths.” His discipline isn’t all about just punishing His children whenever we’re bad, but about guiding us, pointing the way back to the path of righteousness.  Let me explain by breaking down the Law here for you; go a little LCMS on you for a moment.

God’s Law does three things for us: Instruct, Condemn, and Protect.

Growing Closer with God

In and Out of Focus

My broken glasses...

This has been the state of my glasses for over a week now.  I went to put them on one morning and as you can see it didn’t work out to well.  I have a hard time seeing things that are far away.  Reading a book poses no problem, but trying to see anything more than three feet away takes great effort, concentration, and gives me a headache.  One of  my co-workers offered to let me borrow her glasses, but they just made everything worse, including my headache.  It’s amazing how those little glasses make a big difference on how I see the world around me.  Without them everything is just hazy and my eyes tire quickly under the strain of trying to get things in focus on their own.  That’s how I feel when I’m not spending time in the Word like I should be.

Praying Back God’s Word

How often have we wanted to talk with God about something specific, only to discover the words just aren’t there? Not having the words is the least of our worries, because God tells us in Romans 8:26:

“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”

Even when the words escape us, His Holy Spirit, who dwells within our hearts, speaks FOR us! WOW! Since God and the Spirit are one…God is actually telling Himself our prayers even though we have no idea what to say! Trippy, incredible, and so true! God doesn’t stop there. He has given us His Word to use boldly in prayer when we don’t quite know where to start.

Memorizing God’s Word

When I was in college I performed in over 14 plays and I memorized hundreds of lines, sooooo I have compiled a dozen ways to help you commit God’s Word in your heart…

Tips and Ideas for Memorizing Scripture

{ You can combine some of these ideas together.}

1.    Start small!  There’s no need to try and memorize a huge verse right away.  Start with shorter ones and work your way up, memorizing a longer verse each week.  You can also divide up a passage over the course of a month.  For example, Psalm 23 could be memorized over the course of one month, memorizing one or two lines each week.

Yes, I Know….and I Understand Completely

I wasn’t planning on posting today, in fact I have two posts on Jonah that I’ve been working on, but I started writing this for my “About Me” page and it just sorta morphed into this {I will also post this on my “About Me” page}…

You know, I’ve been sitting here for waaaaaay too long wondering what I would write here.  I even snuck over to a few of my favorite bloggers to see what cool info they put on their “About Me” page…if they even had one.  Then I got a phone call from a precious woman in need.  She needed to know how to help her daughter whose two youngest sons are both very ill; one of which will experience heaven long before many of us ever will.  She needed to know that her neighbor down the street wasn’t going to hell because he committed suicide.  She needed to know that God still loved her even though her days are so full, she has not been able to study His Word.  She needed to know how I am still strong even though I have been through so much this year.  My heart went out to her, because I know where she is at, I understand asking the questions, “How do I keep going?” and “How can I offer strength…when I feel like I have none?”

Sacrifice of Praise

For the longest time, I thought the phrase “sacrifice of praise” was an oxymoron.  After all, why would giving praise to God ever be considered a sacrifice?  When you offer a sacrifice, it costs you something.  If it’s easily given, then it’s not a sacrifice at all…it’s simply an offering.  So why on earth would we call any sort of praise a sacrifice?

It wasn’t until recently that I truly understood just what that means.
