Lent, it’s more than giving up

Standard

AWI’ve been giving up something for Lent for as long as I can remember. Sometimes it’s the usual, chocolate or something I eat/drink too much of anyway.

Sometimes I take on something…but I can’t remember what I’ve taken on in years past, so I must not have done it too well or picked something wimpy.

This year I decided to make it count.

Our loved ones don’t know they have been kidnapped.

Our loved ones don’t know they have been kidnapped.

Our hearts are broken. How do we cope with the loss of friends and family we have loved so dearly? We thought they were safe. How could this happen?

The emptiness left by their absence consumes the deepest part of our soul. It’s nothing like losing someone because they’ve moved or been called home heavenward.

We hit your knees over and over. Relentlessly pounding the door of heaven.

Dear God…bring them home. I can’t bear the thought of _______ being lost to us forever. Please God, please…

What makes these gut wrenching prayers even more painful…our loved ones don’t even know they are being held captive.

My husband and I have an affinity for saltwater reef aquariums. We’ve had everything from a seven-foot, 200gallon custom tank, to a 10gallon little sweetie which graced our counter-top. At the moment we have a humble 20gallon reef atop a stand my husband crafted with his own hands.

Layering the bottom of this tank is a fine black sand. It is simply breathtaking compared to the regular beach sand or even the white sand we’ve used in the past. There is a sparkle which catches my eye each time I walk by…and what girl doesn’t like a little sparkle in the midst of her day?

The profound number of grains is wondrous to me, each one hand crafted by God. There are more than I can possibly count, yet the sand takes up little space.

But the picture above…isn’t sand.

This week I started the Proverbs 31 online Bible study What Happens When Women Say Yes To God by Lysa TerKeurst. The Blog Hop asked us to share:

We’ve been studying and meditating on our memory verse all week. Share what loving God with all your heart, soul, and strength means to you or what God has spoken to you through this verse. Deuteronomy 6:5, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.”

Though this post was written while going through Wendy Blight’s study, I felt it absolutely answers what this verse means to me. I hope you will agree…

As I drove home from work today, I reflected on the immense blessings God has continually poured out in my life and the life of my husband. I have been at a loss as to just why God would keep giving and giving.

Let me share just a few of these blessings that have occurred within the last month or so…some seem small, while others are just plain huge…

UPDATE! March 2, 2012

Guess what y’all!! Our 30 Hour Famine event was AWESOME!! Between the three churches that got together and the 45 youth participating {not counting our fearless leaders}. We raised $3,500!! Thank you so much for your donations and for sharing our page with all your friends on Facebook, Twitter, and email!! There’s still time to donate if you would like to do so…{see below}.

If you are visiting my blog from my guest post on Melissa Taylor’s blog, welcome!!  Below are a couple of other posts you may be interested in reading, based on what you have already read this week: Memorizing God’s Word or A.C.T.S.S.

I have wanted to update my blog for over two weeks, but I just haven’t had the time and I’ve had so many ideas and devotions swirling around in my head that they seem to have blurred together into one giant “Go Jesus!” blob!  As I sat at my computer this morning, staring at the computer screen I started thinking about my job.  One of the joys of my job is that I get to work with children and youth and I’ve decided to take this post as an opportunity to brag on these incredible kids.
